Out of School Time: NYC Students Skip Classes to Protest Trump Immigration Order

Jim Fields
Several hundred New York City high school students walked out of their classes Tuesday to protest President Trump鈥檚 recent executive order banning travel to the United States from seven mostly Muslim countries.

At Manhattan鈥檚 Foley Square, across from the United States Courthouse, student speakers rallied the crowd around hot-button issues ranging from student debt to the Betsy DeVos confirmation. But the crowd, consisting mostly of teens, was most energized by the perceived discriminatory overreach of the Trump administration鈥檚 order.

鈥淓veryone should have a fair shot at the American dream,鈥 Niko, a student at the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis High School for International Careers, told the 74. He said the president 鈥淸isn鈥檛] allowing that to happen.鈥 Draped in the flag of Mexico, where his grandparents are from, he called Trump 鈥渦n-American.鈥

The organizer of the rally and march, Hebh Jamal, reminded students that they hold voting power for the future and that 鈥渢o win, we need a nationwide student coalition.鈥

For many of the student protesters, participating came at a price 鈥 being marked absent for skipping school.
鈥淭oday, you have all decided to walk out of your classrooms. For many of us, this comes at a considerable risk,鈥 Jamal said. 鈥淲e have done this today because we realize these are not normal times. We cannot go to school, to class, to our exams as if things were normal,鈥 she said, provoking shouts of 鈥渘o鈥 and cheers from the crowd.

After the rally, the students marched to 26 Federal Plaza, where the Federal Bureau of Investigation and U.S. Department of Homeland Security, including Immigration and Customs Enforcement, are located, chanting, 鈥淟et them in!鈥
